My theme for project 52 is "wandering life
" so every picture will depict some aspect of my life, generally a significant event.
This was a week of family. My sister and her boyfriend came up for most of the week. On the Sunday before this week, my cousin had her bridal shower. On Tuesday, my brother showed up, just home from his latest deployment. On Wednesday we had a big family BBQ Potluck, for which, this was my contribution. On Thursday my dad and brother drove me to the other side of the island so I could donate blood for the first time ever (so hope I'll be able to do it again!!). And on Saturday, my cousin got married to a wonderful woman. My brother, sister and her boyfriend and parents all took off in the next few days (parents left me home alone for a month and a bit).
(Taken on time, posted late.)The watermelon monster.
I tried to make a "watermelon shark" like I kept seeing on Imgur.com, but it didn't turn out quite how I was expecting so it became a watermelon monster.
-Wash the outside of the watermelon.
-Position the watermelon how you want it to sit, cut the bottom off so it sits in this position with no assistance.
-Decide how you want to carve the watermelon (it works just like a jack-o-lantern), making sure there is a space large enough for whatever serving utinsil you're using.
-Carve roughly (don't go into details just yet).
-Scoop out all of the innards and put them in a bowl to the side. The bowl should be bigger than you'd think you'd need, you'd be surprised how much fruit comes out.
-Add the finishing touches to the carving. A toothpick from inside the watermelon will allow you to add other bits of fruit or pieces of the watermelon skin for decoration on the outside.
-Make sure the watermelon innards in your bowl are all small enough to eat with a spoon. Don't worry if they're not square, it won't matter.
-Add whatever other fruit you want to add to your fruit salad. Mix thuroughly. (If you add a bit of sprite or ginger ale before you mix, you'll be able to preserve the colour of the fruit, apple and banana are particularly bad at discolouring.)
-Position your Watermelon Monster in a large dish with space around it for more fruit.
-Using a spoon, fill the Watermelon Monster with fruit as high as you can fill it. Fill the bowl around it once the monster is full. (Don't add the juice if at all possible, the fruit will drain more juice when it's done.)
-Your Watermelon Monster is done!
-Pour the juice from your mixing bowl into glasses halfway, add sprite, serve as sparkling fruit juice to friends and family (or yourself, hey, you did the work!), or add some hard liquor once it's chilled for a nice treat (if you're legal drinking age).
